For Days Like These

For days like these, there are sunglasses. For days like these, there are whistles. For days like these, there are big plastic barrels to haul water in...For days like these, there are arms like mine, to hug, to hold, to enjoy and to be blessed!
Taking time to reconnect with a long time friend who lives in another town. We got to watch Grade 6/7 basketball and talk about adult children, wedding blessings, grandchildren and the trials and joys of family life. Such a lovely way to spend some time! The drive out in this gloriously sunny day was awesome, with the boys playing quiet car games like I-Spy and joking with one another. Wandering into the school gym that was my husband's first teaching experience brought back memories of my adult children as babies.  Buying groceries at the General Store- yes, a true general store in every sense, with hardware and necessities on one level and groceries on another, with old time service with a smile!
This morning we woke up to the news that our switch on our pressure tank was blown. This means that the well pump cannot supply water to the house. This means there is no water for showers. This means the 12 year old--well, I will let you fill in THOSE blanks! Thankfully my husband can shower at school. Thankfully I can shower at work. But no water means no coffee! We had some instant in the house, thankfully. No water also means no flushing. Nuff said. I had a friend ask if I had not spent some time hauling water in days gone by. Actually, we lived without power, but we did have water. We were 'off the grid' for a few years, but when we were, we had water and we had a generator, even though the gennie was used sparingly. Our water was pumped up to a 200 gallon reservoir in the top of our house, where gravity did the rest as needed. Great system! But in our time without power, I was known to say often, I could easily live without power, but I sure could NOT live without water! Same feelings today!
My grandson is quite the huggie bear. He doesn't like anyone to leave the house without hugs and probably kisses. It adds a few minutes to getting out of the house, but you sure leave with a smile on your face and a warmth in your heart! Tonight, he got to call his auntie via Skype--we love Skype! The whole idea of viewing a person while you talk makes it so much like you are right there. They were sticking their tongues out at each other, she was showing him her fish tank, he was telling her about the frog in his other grandma's tank. Yup, we love Skype! And it sure is cheaper than an airplane ticket!
So, today, no water. I guess that is a good thing because we also have no dryer. Have you every noticed, when it rains it pours? No complaining though. We have good water, we can afford a dryer, we can do our laundry in machines rather than the town square or in the creek. We have the luxury of a bath tub AND a shower in our home. We have a dishwasher- and to tell you the truth, doing up the dishes tonight was not a big job. Once organized and after having the freshly boiled water added in, it took less than 10 minutes. It gives a chance to chatter with the kids, to ask questions about the day, to tease and joke with one another. We are so blessed. And once again, I am grateful.
