Tradition!

Passing on traditions, creating new ones, deciding which ones will actually move down through the generations. Christmas provides opportunities for memories to be made and traditions to linger. With a grandson, we have opportunities to enjoy this Advent, this waiting. We can prepare our hearts and remind ourselves of the importance of the story, the importance on family, of friends.
Years ago, when my own were young, I made this quilted Advent calendar. Now it is fun to fill the pockets with treats and goodies, counting down the days. My grandson has been enjoying the creche, where we have told the story so far of Mary being told by the angel that she will bear a son. Then we talked about Joseph being visited by an angel too. Our angel is in the basket that holds Mary, Joseph and the waiting manger. We have angels hanging way above the scene as well and look for them each time we talk abut what is happening. A sheep has been added to our basket-barn because we have no shepherds with our figurines. Last night, he brought his mommy over and asked her as I have asked him, "Where is baby Jesus?" We are building our hopes and our hearts.
He also has a birthday in this season and will celebrate becoming three tomorrow. In this day and age of Skype, we were able to connect with his auntie so she could watch as he opened his present from her. When the miles are between us, it is so much fun to be able to pretend there are none at all!
We also spent time making a Gingerbread House. It took the considerable patience of a few adults along with two excited boys to put together--another fun tradition!

We all took shots at it, but were rescued by the better builder when our walls kept tumbling down! The finished product had to sit outside in the cold to set, but it sure was fun!

The boys had lots of fun helping--and licking their fingers and testing the goodies, so they decided t play the new game that my wee boy received for his birthday! It will take a bit to build his skill, but I know that he will be a pro in no time at all--and how appropriate it is that it is a game about monkeys!
Or should I say, FOR monkeys!

Traditions. Passing it on down through the generations. I wonder what will be important to my children to pass on and to their children to keep? I am blessed each day as I consider my own potential to impact as a Nana. And I am so very grateful!
